[RL] Seventh Heaven

Marlene had known better than to say anything at Tifa's obviously worsened mood. In fact, she had even convinced Denzel to be compliant and immediately go upstairs to sleep when Tifa asked them to, which left the woman standing at the bar by herself, staring down at a sink full of dirty water and dishes. She slammed her hand down against the counter, trying to find some way to vent her frustration. It wouldn't do to go to sleep angry, she knew it would just put a kink in her neck and she knew better than to go a full day's work like that.

She leaned back against the glass case behind her and sighed. It was a chore to deal with Cloud's childish behavior, sometimes, almost as if she had three children running around rather than an extra adult to help out. But, that only made sense. He hadn't been doing very much helping lately, after all. In fact, he'd barely been home at all, and he didn't even accept that there was a problem in the fact.

She threw her dish towel onto the counter and ran her fingers through her hair. Going back over the problem wasn't helping her to calm down an. In fact, it was proving to make her more angry with Cloud.

Tifa's eyes snapped open when she heard the door creak. She hadn't been expecting anyone to come in this late, she had the closed sign up. Her first thought was Rufus, in all actuality. Coming to continue his arrogant prancing. She looked up to confirm this and saw Cloud standing there.

She wasn't initially able to believe what her eyes were seeing. When she finally managed that much, it was still a chore to find appropriate words to put to the anger that was rushing through her at seeing him. Her fists clenched but she forced herself to loosen them and just moved to go back to the dishes as nonchalantly as she could manage.

"You're home early," under normal circumstances, the words would have held a certain cheerfulness to them. However, after their earlier argument, she couldn't put anything but scathing accusation in them. Clearly, he wasn't as busy as he liked to think.

"There were things to get done. And if I don't do it, who will?" She was pretty obviously taking another stab at his reliability, each dish she cleaned getting slammed onto the counter beside her recklessly. She didn't care for the attitude he'd taken with her earlier, and she cared even less for his apathetic behavior, now.

Had he chosen to simply forget it had happened? She wouldn't be surprised. Cloud's coping skills were minimal. And, as she'd just recently discovered for herself, people didn't change unless they wanted to. And he could care less the state of Seventh Heaven and all of its residents.

Glass after glass and plate after plate were hitting the counter, seeming to voice her agitation for her as it mounted with the growing silence between them.

"That's it? That's really it, you're just going to go to sleep and act like nothing even . . ." She trailed off, shaking her head. She was too mad to find appropriate words. She turned away from the sink and headed to block his way up the stairs, only managing to meet him at them.

"Cloud, you can't just keep running away from your problems. You need to learn how to deal with them head-on!"

"I expect you to be a responsible adult and acknowledge that your actions have consequences for people beyond yourself!" Tifa's voice began to raise and there was a desperate sound to it, almost as if she were choking back even more emotion than she was displaying. She lowered her voice, realizing that the kids were upstairs trying to sleep. "Your actions have repercussions that affect the kids."

"They don't understand that, Cloud. I do, and I still think it's stupid. There's no reason for you to think staying away from them will protect them. All they want is for you to be around and you can't even manage that." Tifa bit her lip and relinquished a sigh, turning away from him. "Cloud, we're here for you, so why won't you just let us be?"

She waited for a moment before sighing again and starting up the stairs. She couldn't deal with this. She was exhausted from being angry, she was exhausted from being upset. Why did she keep letting him upset her? She should be used to his antics, by now.

Tifa looked up at him stubbornly, not accepting this as an answer. "We want to help, Cloud, what part of that don't you understand? You can't keep pushing us away because you 'don't want to drag [us] into [your] personal problems'. We want to be dragged in, or we wouldn't be so damn persistent. And, it's not just me, and it's not just the kids, everyone. Yuffie, Vincent, Cid, we all see you're hurting. But you won't let us help. You just go running."

"But, you don't have to! Whether you need us or not, we're here for you. I just . . . wish you'd let me in, Cloud. Sometimes, I feel like I don't know you at all." Tifa sighed heavily, looking down and shaking her head. "And then I have to wonder, if I don't know you, what are the kids going to remember? They barely see you."

"I'm not asking you to forget. I sure as hell haven't forgotten, Aeris was my friend, too, Cloud!" Tifa retorted in exasperation. "You always say you'll be around more once you've finished up with every job, but then you just find another."

"Cloud, no!" Tifa instinctively reached out and grabbed his wrist. "You can't just leave. Please." She looked down. This was her fault. She was the selfish one, making this a bigger deal than it had to be. Why was she trying to blame her own bad parenting on Cloud? She bit her lip. "I'm sorry."

"Cloud, please don't do this." What was it with her and losing people, lately? She clenched the hand he'd jerked away from to her heart and looked down. "I'm sorry, please, just don't go."
